At A Yen for Yarn, we believe that crafters deserve access to the highest quality natural fibres and accessories – yarns that make us feel special, nurtured and alive! Yarns that allow us to enjoy our creative endeavours not only during the making process, but for years to come.
As women today, our lives often centre around “doing it all”. We support our partners, children, parents and workplaces, leaving us with very little “me time”.
Being able to take time out to relax with our craft allows us to explore our creativity and detach from our otherwise busy lives.
Don’t you agree that something this important deserves yarns of the very best quality and value?
At A Yen for Yarn, we take our selection process very seriously.
For starters, all of our yarns are made from 100% natural fibres – no nasty synthetics here!
Wherever possible, we support Australian producers across all stages of the growing and manufacturing process. Being a small retailer, we are able to access more exclusive, low-volume local yarn producers, allowing you to enjoy yarns not otherwise readily available on the market. These are people who are passionate about their products, and they have some great stories!
We also support a number of overseas producers who not only meet our quality requirements, but also our high ethical standards – companies employing locals and nurturing their local crafting industry, producers dedicated to environmental sustainability as well as those promoting and supporting women and girls’ rights and education.
We also believe that crafters need access to space for crafting. Our studio space in Melbourne’s outer east gives you a venue to engage in a timeless process of women gathering to share stories and learn new skills. It’s also a great way to experience our yarns “hands-on”, with many of our products available in stock.
The patterns we use in workshops and classes are designed in-house and tested by experienced crafters. They match beautifully with our range of products, allowing you to start creating right away.
We know that by being together “in real life”, where you are not only supported on your craft journey, but you also end up with something beautiful that YOU made, is a rare treasure. Despite new technologies and leading busier lives than ever, as human beings we still yearn for deeper relationships, community, meaning and creativity.
And that’s what A Yen for Yarn is really about.
A Yen for Yarn was born out of my own need to connect with others, and my local craft circle’s yen for the finest yarn.
Hi, I’m Shona Menzies – yarn lover, keen crafter and founder of A Yen for Yarn.
In 2013, as a recently repatriated Melbournian and new parent to a troubled teenager, I was finding life rather empty, challenging and isolated. I had gone from writing courses and managing a teaching team in Singapore to full-time domestic duties in the outer reaches of suburbia.
Knowing that I had always been interested in craft, a friend encouraged me go to her craft circle, where I learned to crochet. Quite literally, I was hooked!
It was during our discussions one day that the challenge of finding high quality, natural fibre yarns in the suburbs was raised. Big box stores were taking over, and many smaller local boutiques had gone out of business. Meanwhile, we were devoting our precious time and energy into creating beautiful things that we wanted to treasure. Cheap, poor quality yarns were not the answer. Neither was travelling miles to inner city boutiques.
And so it was that A Yen for Yarn was born – an online yarn store and crafting community dedicated to bringing keen crafters and fine yarns together.
